Allowances

Clause 19 of the Clerks Award provides allowances that your clerical employees receive for various reasons.

Allowances include a clothing and footwear allowance for any damage to clothing or footwear, first aid, meal, vehicle and living away from home allowances.

All of the allowances under the Clerks Award form part of your clerical employees' minimum entitlements, so you must ensure they are receiving all applicable allowances.

The allowances apply in full, as written in the Clerks Award. Read clause 19 of the Clerks Award for full details about the allowances that may apply to your employees.

Allowances calculated on the standard rate

Some allowances under the Clerks Award are calculated as a percentage of the ‘standard rate’. The standard rate is the minimum wage for the Level 2 - Year 1 classification as it appears in the award. The standard rate may be updated on 1 July each year and is currently:

Standard rate Effective 1 July 2013
Weekly standard rate $724.50
Hourly standard rate $19.07

Example

The first aid allowance under the Clerks Award is 1.5% of the standard rate, paid weekly.

Effective 1 July 2013, the weekly standard rate is $724.50

1.5% of $724.50 = $10.87

An employee who is trained to render first aid, holds an appropriate current first aid qualification and who is appointed by their employer to perform first aid duty will receive an allowance of $10.87 per week.

Employees working in Northern Territory and Western Australia
