Pay & conditions for trainees

A  trainee’s pay and conditions come from the relevant modern award or enterprise agreement and the National Employment Standards (NES).

To find minimum rates of pay for trainees you can use the trainee wage calculators.

All of the other conditions in the NES, and the modern award or enterprise agreement apply to trainees in the same way as they apply to other employees unless the award or agreement specifies different conditions for them. In addition, the training contract may have other conditions that apply to the trainee, such as a minimum number of hours of work.

Note: An employee who is undertaking a qualification that is not recognised as a traineeship, or who hasn’t been properly signed up as a trainee will be entitled to the relevant adult or junior rate for the type of work they are performing.
