Pay & conditions for apprentices

An apprentice’s pay and conditions come from the relevant modern award or enterprise agreement and the National Employment Standards (NES).

The rate of pay an apprentice is paid depends on the the length of the apprenticeship and how much training the apprentice has completed. Apprentices usually receive a percentage of the qualified tradesperson’s rate. This percentage increases as the apprentice progresses through the apprenticeship.

Visit Finding the right pay for tools to help you find the minimum rates of pay, allowances and penalty rates that apply to apprentices.

All of the other conditions in the NES, and the modern award or enterprise agreement apply to apprentices unless the award or agreement specifies different conditions for them.

Visit our Industry page for specific information about entitlements in certain key industries including retail, hair & beauty, clerical and vehicle repair and manufacturing.

Note: An employee who is undertaking a qualification that is not recognised as an apprenticeship, or who hasn’t been properly signed up as an apprentice will be entitled to the relevant adult or junior rate for the type of work they are performing.
