The Freedom of Information Act 1982 introduces an Information Publication Scheme (IPS) for Australian Government agencies that are subject to the Act. As an agency subject to the FOI Act, the Fair Work Ombudsman is required to comply with these requirements.
Under the IPS, agencies are required to publish certain categories of information online, where possible, and may also proactively publish other government information online. This information is provided below.

Who we are
The Fair Work Ombudsman is the agency, established by the Fair Work Act 2009, responsible for providing education, assistance and advice about the Commonwealth workplace relations system.
The Fair Work Ombudsman is also responsible for impartially enforcing compliance with the Act and Fair Work instruments.
What we do
The Fair Work Ombudsman is responsible for promoting harmonious, productive and cooperative workplace relations as well as promoting compliance with the Fair Work Act and fair work instruments, by providing education, assistance and advice to workplace participants.
The Fair Work Ombudsman’s functions also include monitoring compliance with, and investigating contraventions of, the Fair Work Act and Fair Work instruments.
The Fair Work Ombudsman commences proceedings in a court, or makes applications to the Fair Work Commission, to enforce the Fair Work Act, Fair Work instruments and safety net contractual entitlements.
The Fair Work Ombudsman represents employees who are, or may become, a party to proceedings in a court, or a party to a matter before Fair Work Commission, under the Fair Work Act, or a Fair Work instrument, if the Fair Work Ombudsman considers that representing the employees or outworkers will promote compliance with the Fair Work Act or a Fair Work instrument.
Our decision-making powers and other powers affecting members of the public
The Fair Work Ombudsman exercises decision-making powers under Commonwealth workplace laws, including the Fair Work Act and related legislation, the Independent Contractors Act 2006 and associated regulations.
The Fair Work Ombudsman also exercises decision-making powers under the FOI Act and the Privacy Act 1988.

The Fair Work Ombudsman is required to publish information that the agency routinely gives access to in response to freedom of information requests. The Fair Work Ombudsman will be monitoring requests to determine the type of information routinely requested to make available in the future.
