QLD Pharmacy Industry Audit Program 2011

Campaign summary: During 2011, Fair Work Inspectors conducted a compliance assessment in the Queensland pharmacy industry. Assessing compliance with wages, record – keeping, payslip, meal break and minimum hour of engagement obligations, inspectors reviewed the records of 575 businesses. Of the 575 assessment conducted, 320 (55.7%) employers were found to be compliant whilst 255 (44.3%) were in contravention. The majority of the contraventions identified related to the underpayment of wages. The audit recovered approximately $195 000 for 1334 underpaid employees.

QLD Real Estate Industry Regional Campaign 2011

Campaign summary: In response to concerns received from some Queensland realtors, during February 2011 Fair Work Inspectors reviewed records of employers in the QLD real estate industry. We assessed compliance with schedule E of the Real Estate Industry Award 2010, which stipulates that employers and employees must negotiate a remuneration structure for the employee, and formalise this in an agreement. This must be recorded in writing and lodged with the Queensland Property Industry Register. Of the 156 audits undertaken, we found 75 (48%) employers to be compliant, while the remaining 81 (52%) were in contravention.

QLD Manufacturing Industry (Metal Finishing Sector) Audit Program 2010

Campaign summary: From August 2010 Fair Work Inspectors conducted 413 audits among the Metal Finishing Sector of the QLD Manufacturing Industry. The audits were undertaken to assess compliance with Commonwealth workplace laws, with time/wage record keeping and correct payment of wages given particular attention.
Of the 412 audits finalised, 306 (74%) employers were found to be meeting their obligations, whilst the remaining 106 (26%) were in contravention. As a result of the audit program, a total of $93.258 has been recovered on behalf of 203 employees.

North Queensland Education Visits Program 2011

Campaign summary: Due to the recent changes in legislation, some employees and employers are confused about how the changes affect their rights and obligations. This has been evident by the number of enquiries received by the FWO’s Townsville and Cairns offices. In light of this, Fair Work Inspectors undertook education visits in Innisfail, Port Douglas, Kuranda, Ayr, Ingham, Cardwell and Home Hill. Between March and June 2011, Fair Work Inspectors visited and educated 134 employers on their Commonwealth workplace law obligations.

Queensland Fitness Industry Audit Program 2011

Campaign summary: Between February and July 2011 the Fair Work Ombudsman conducted an audit program within the Queensland fitness industry. A total of 106 employers operating within the Queensland fitness industry were asked to send in their time and wage records for assessment. A total of 88 employers were found to be complying with their time and wage obligations whilst 17 were found to have contraventions. The audit program recovered in excess of $5500 for 11 employees.

Food Court Audit Program 2010

Campaign summary: Fair Work Inspectors (FWI) from Queensland will be undertaking an audit of food outlets located in food courts and central business districts with the intention of ensuring compliance with Commonwealth workplace relations laws.
Audits will be conducted both in regional and metropolitan areas during the months of October and November 2010. The audits are a part of the Fair Work Ombudsman's proactive audit targeting campaign which allows us to better understand the sector's level of compliance with Workplace laws.
During the audit period, FWI's will visit identified businesses and examine time and wage records in order to assess compliance with record keeping and industry rates of pay.
The audits will also provide the Fair Work Ombudsman an opportunity to ensure employers understand the Modern Award Transitional process and the small business aids available through the Fair Work Ombudsman website.
The final report on the audit will be released at the conclusion of the audit process in late November.
