Adelaide University Law School Professors, Andrew Stewart and Rosemary Owens

In late 2011 we identified unpaid work in Australia as an emerging issue that warranted our attention.

We responded by developing a fact sheet and website information about different types of unpaid work arrangements, in consultation with major stakeholders. We also determined that further research was necessary as the issue raised complex issues.

In April 2012 we commissioned research into the nature, prevalence and regulation of unpaid work experience, internships and trial periods in Australia. The research was done by Adelaide University Law School Professors, Andrew Stewart and Rosemary Owens.

Findings, recommendations & what we’ll do

The final report was delivered in February 2013 - you can download the summary and full report below. We will use the research to help us develop and implement processes for education and enforcement in the area of unpaid work.

We’ve also developed an infographic to help you understand the issues, recommendations and what we’re going to do - download it below.
